Results of the SELECT trial showed that semaglutide 2.4mg (a weight loss medication marketed as Wegovy) reduces cardiovascular events (heart attack and stroke) by 20% compared to placebo.

This is a significant finding, as obesity is a major risk factor for cardiovascular disease. The SELECT trial is the first large-scale study to show that a weight loss medication can reduce the risk of cardiovascular events in people with obesity. This could have a major impact on the prevention and treatment of cardiovascular disease.

In the study, by 48 weeks, participants lost an average of 24.2% of their body weight. These numbers are approaching what we see with bariatric surgery. It's still in clinical trials and expected to get approved in the next few years.
